Treatment for PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is a common endocrine condition that affects over one in ten women and is a leading cause of infertility. PCOS can lead to other serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes as well as many unwanted symptoms like weight gain, excessive hair growth and loss, mood swings, acne, anxiety, depression, and irregular periods.
While there is no cure for PCOS, there are many options to effectively manage the symptoms and long-term health risks. Depending on the individual, treatment includes an integrative approach, utilizing a combination of medications and complementary therapies therapies such as nutrition counseling, supplements, acupuncture, stress reduction activities (e.g. meditation and massage), and counseling.
PCOS & Infertility
Women with PCOS tend not to ovulate regularly, meaning they don’t release an egg from the ovary at a predictable time each month. This makes it very difficult for them to get pregnant via conventional means. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options.
Sometimes, natural therapies such as nutrition counseling and acupuncture can bring about regular ovulation. In other instances, we recommend the use of medications to regulate the timing of ovulation. If we are able to induce ovulation using these methods, we then typically recommend timed intercourse or artificial insemination to achieve conception.
If these methods are not successful, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an option that is highly successful while avoiding a higher order multiple pregnancy. At Society Hill Reproductive Medicine, we tailor your exact treatment plan to your specific medical history and body’s response to natural therapies and medications.
